New School Funding Study Released
On Wednesday, April 10, 2019, the Wisconsin Association for Equity in Funding (AEF) released the final of three research studies conducted over the course of 5 years examining the school funding system in Wisconsin in order to inform the public and policymakers during the budget debate.
Our research provides independent, data-based evidence that many of the recommendations presented by the Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding, and contained in Governor Tony Evers’ budget proposal will have a positive impact on student outcome and opportunity across the state, in every school district.
This final study provides critical new information that funding disparity between diverse districts in Wisconsin has a negative effect on student outcome. While the negative effects of funding disparity differ, depending on rates of poverty and truancy, our research shows that no district is immune from the negative effects of inadequately funding public education. The new study also provides the starting point for an “adequate funding” model based on the combined work in all three of our studies, as well as the existing research into school funding adequacy.
